Making the best use of our finite resources should be a huge priority for the nations of the world, yet we still waste so much of what we can't replace. If we want there to be a civilization in the future, we should take a look at what we're leaving for them to live on, and live with.
So much is made about the failing of American politics that one could be led to believe there's another, better system functioning somewhere else in the world. But, taken with its benefits, and the ability of politics as a tool of competent American governance, we could do a lot worse.

Haiti is trying desperately to get back to life and they're going to need a lot of help to make that happen. The New Year doesn't always bring new opportunity to everyone, but we can learn to distribute it better. Helping Haiti would be a good place to start.

What in the world is going on with politicians lately? One day they're telling us everything is fine, and in a few days we hear how bad everything is, and how the "other guys" are making things worse. I don't understand it anymore. Then when their business-rich backers say they need financial help from taxpayers, they're given it almost without condition, but with promises about how much better things will be than if they are given no help.

Why did we let them spend all that bailout money if things are still awful in the economy? What did we get for it? All we heard for weeks and weeks was how if the corporations didn't get this taxpayer-funded support, the whole economy would grind to a screeching halt. And if we waited too long to give it to them, the damage and fallout would be worse than any since the Great Depression, and the American people would have to spend several years struggling through a sluggish recovery period.

Well, they sure enough got their money-and they got a lot of it. Funny thing, though. Last I heard, unemployment in the US was still hovering near double-digits. That wouldn't be so bad, but those same power-mad politicians keep holding the emergency financial resources for the unemployed hostage so they can be traded for political favor. And how many jobs have been created in the last couple years since the bailout? Not very many at all!  And who cares if there are twenty-five new fast-food restaurants opening up every month, or whatever the number is, because who's going to go eat at them?

That's the thing our rich politicians don't seem to be getting about trying to preserve the country using a service economy in the first place: People will choose to keep the power on rather than go out for a burger and fries. Every time hands down. Besides, that's not the kind of growth we were sold on when the bailout checks was being mailed. So I'm starting to wonder if these power-mad politicians, with their hands all up in Uncle Sam's cookie jar, are doing all they said they would to make sure We The People are getting a fair return on our investment. It's time for them to stop all the pointless fighting, roll up their sleeves, and get back to doing what they were voted into office to do.

Summary:
Things in the American economy weren't great before the 2008 bailout of the financial industry. But since the money was lent, and we're still in the deep red, shouldn't we want to know why big politicians and big business were in such a big hurry to get the money?
